First Grade
Monday 9:40-10:50a.m. Monday 1-2p.m. This course’s primary focus is designed using Phonics Pathways by Dolores Hiskes. The students will also be introduced to writing. The writing portion will include copy work, dictation and narration. The objective is to provide the children with a fun and hands on method to foster effortless reading habits and an introduction to writing. Phonics is organized by sounds and spelling patterns. These sounds and patterns are built into words, syllables, phrases, and sentences. Each new step builds upon previous skills for constant review and reinforcement. We will learn in small steps so it is easy for everyone, including children with very short attentions spans. The course will start with short vowels because they are the basic foundation that is needed to build good reading and spelling skills. After short vowels we will graduate to blending exercises. Blending practice is critical to the reading process because it aides in correcting choppy reading, such as “kuh-a-t” for “cat.” Reading and spelling are taught simultaneously – teaching them together reinforces and enhances each skill. Phonics Pathways contains all of the spelling rules and is a complete spelling reference. We will practice memorizing and singing as many rules as possible. We will also study digraph endings, diphthongs, suffixes, prefixes, root words, compound words contractions and many more. All learning will be evaluated through games, activities and fluency checks. You will be given a lesson plan with a detailed description of what to study the rest of the week. Supplies: Phonics Pathways book, white board, (lined on one side and blank on the other) dry erase marker, and eraser. Following the lesson plans is a requirement for this class.
